The style of the icon belongs to the School of Jerusalem. It is an Arab Greek Orthodox or Greek Catholic icon from an Antiochian or Jerusalem Patriarchate church. Saint Matthew is depicted in bust form, slightly turned to his left. He is looking towards Christ who was at the center of the “Row of Apostles” on the iconostasis. It is confirmed by an Arabic inscription on the back of the icon that says : “To the right, number 2”, an indication of the icon’s position, second to the right of Christ among the apostles.
The background of the icon is gold leaf. The saint’s halo is drawn in a rosary pattern.
Condition : There is a visible restoration in the crook of the saint’s right arm.
